How do dental braces (teeth braces) work?

Dental braces are fixed orthodontic appliances that help correct dental malocclusion defects such as proclined teeth, overjet, overbite, etc. Implants come in different types, depending on the patient’s needs, budget, aesthetic priorities, etc. Generally, metallic braces are the standard, but aesthetic braces like ceramic braces and lingual braces have become the norm in recent years.

Orthodontic treatment usually lasts 12-24 months. During this period, the patient visits the orthodontist 1-2 times a month for braces adjustments.

Dental Braces Treatment: What Happens?

It is typical that people who visit a dental surgeon or orthodontic surgeon for braces treatment are already aware that they have dental misalignment and are prepared to undergo treatment immediately. Braces treatment is a gradual process.

The first stage is consultation, during which the dentist evaluates the dental condition of the patient and treats any cavities or gum diseases that are present. To determine the amount of correction needed, they will perform radiographic exams such as lateral cephalograms, oral prophylactics, bitewing and occlusal x-rays, etc. The orthodontist integrates jaw surgery into the treatment plan if the patient requires it, such as jaw expansion.

Brackets and jaw spacers are then fitted to the mouth. The jaw spacers help make space between the teeth for wires and elastics. After the wires are placed in the brackets, most patients only need to return once a month. A patient will need to wear a removable retainer or get a fixed retainer after braces treatment is complete to help preserve the results of the braces treatment. The initial adjustment period for braces is approximately three weeks.

Preparing for Teeth Braces (Dental Braces)?

If you are getting dental braces treatment, you will be unable to eat a wide variety of foods, such as sticky, chewy, crunchy, fried, and oily foods. These foods are often associated with extreme life and dietary adjustments. You also need to maintain excellent oral hygiene in order to avoid dental cavities and gum disease.

The braces require you to use a special toothbrush and to know how to brush around them. It is also important to brush your teeth after each meal or snack. Moreover, all oral sex is off-limits with dental braces, as you may have difficulty kissing someone and you or your partner may end up with a split lip.

How can Dental Braces (Teeth Braces) benefit you?

Dental braces (Teeth Braces) provide the following benefits:

  • An improved smile and appearance can be achieved with dental braces by correcting the jaw position and dental misalignment.

  • It is usually difficult for patients with wide tooth gaps and overcrowded teeth to maintain oral hygiene due to bent and rotated teeth, but once their teeth are aligned, it becomes easier for them to do so.

  • Often, patients with wide tooth gaps and overcrowded teeth find it difficult to maintain oral hygiene due to their bent and rotated teeth. Once their teeth are straightened, they can maintain their oral hygiene more easily.

  • When the teeth are properly aligned and positioned, chewing and biting become much easier.

  • As a result of the uneven distribution of occlusal forces, edentulous dental arches undergo jaw resorption much faster than dentulous dental arches.

  • It can lead to speech impediments such as lisping, whistling sounds while speaking, difficulty enunciating words, etc. It can also encourage oral habits like tongue thrusting, thumb sucking, lip biting, etc.

Dental braces can be supplemented by a variety of jaw surgeries.

Known also as orthognathic surgery, jaw surgery helps correct jaw deformities and realigns the jaw in preparation for orthodontic treatment. The main benefit of jaw realignment surgery is that it improves facial symmetry and appearance. This surgery is only performed when the jaw has finished growing, which is between 14 and 16 years old for women and 17 and 21 years old for men.

The following are some of the benefits of jaw surgery:

  • Enhances biting and chewing motions

  • Maintains occlusal surfaces of teeth by minimizing wear and breakdown

  • When orthodontic treatment is not sufficient to correct a patient's bite issue

  • Ensures that swallowing and speaking issues are corrected

  • Enhances lip contact, appearance, and fullness

  • Provides relief from TMJ pain, clicking sound, and other symptoms

  • Among other things, repair facial injuries and birth defects.

It is usually performed roughly 9-18 months after the start of the braces treatment to ensure that as much dental correction as possible has been accomplished before the surgery. This procedure does not leave any facial scars.

A maxillary osteotomy (upper jaw) is performed on patients with significant receding upper jaws, crossbite or open bite, or toothy or toothless smiles.

In patients with a significant overjet, overbite, or underbite, a mandibular osteotomy is performed in order to correct a significant receded lower jaw.

For patients with a severely receding lower jaw where jaw correction alone is not enough, such as receding chins, misaligned chins, or excessive chins, genioplasty (chin) is recommended.
