Dental implants: what are they?
Dental implants, also known as teeth implants or teeth transplants, are natural-looking alternatives to teeth that restore form, function, and aesthetics in people with missing teeth. The treatment usually lasts for 3-6 months. Dental implants are implanted into the jaw bone by the dentist at the beginning of the treatment.
There are primarily 3 types of dental implants:
In order for endosteal implants to succeed, the patient should have a healthy and strong jawbone.
An alternative to ridge expansion/augmentation surgery is subperiosteal implants. They do not integrate with the jawbone, however, instead rest on top of the bone, attached to a metal frame under the gums.
Patients with insufficient maxillary jaw bone may benefit from zygomatic implants, which are attached to the zygomatic bone instead of the maxillary bone.
An abutment screw and a crown are placed on an implant post once the implant has integrated completely with the surrounding bone. The implant can support a fixed dental crown or a removable dental bridge in edentulous patients.

After dental implant surgery and treatment, what should I expect?
Following surgery:
In most cases, your surgeon will remove the sutures 7-10 days after the surgery if there is no infection. Your surgeon will close the surgical site with sutures and place a dental pack to cover the healing site. Over-the-counter medications can be used to manage postoperative pain and swelling in this region during the first 6-7 days.
Your dentist will perform a postoperative checkup once every 2-3 weeks to ensure the implant is integrating with the surrounding bone after the sutures are removed.
It is important to maintain good oral hygiene during this time to prevent infection. During this period, you should avoid smoking and tobacco usage as they may delay osseointegration and the recovery period. To prevent irritation of your implant site, you should eat only warm or cold soft foods.
As a result of the treatment:
After the crown has been placed onto your implant abutment, your dentist will provide you with oral care guidelines and dietary recommendations to promote the success of your dental implant. It is typically possible to consume most foods following the placement of a dental implant, but if your implant is connected to a removable denture or bridge, caution may be needed when consuming harder foods. To ensure proper oral health and avoid potential implant failure, it is advised to abstain from gutka and tobacco chewing after the procedure.
Do dental implants need to be placed at certain times?
In patients with certain medical conditions, dental implants may be necessary for medical reasons in addition to aesthetic reasons.
Over 4-5 missing teeth on one side of the dental arch constitutes severe tooth loss
Missing molars cause difficulty chewing
Extra spaces between the teeth cause food to lodge between them
Degeneration of the edentulous jaw bone
Patients with complete edentulous mouths
Permanent teeth missing from birth
Missing teeth cause speech impediments
Dentures or bridges that cause discomfort
Lack of tooth space, etc., makes it difficult to maintain oral hygiene.
Dental implants are comparatively expensive and time-consuming treatments, so they are only recommended for patients who are in dire need. If you are considering dental implants, schedule an appointment with the best dentist near you.
Dental implants have many benefits
Implants are the closest alternative to natural teeth, both functionally and aesthetically. They restore almost full chewing capacity to the patient, and they feel almost exactly like natural teeth.
In general, dental implants last a lifetime and are easy to maintain. They are also biocompatible, meaning they mesh well with the body.
By keeping the adjacent teeth stable, they prevent them from moving or rotating.
By maintaining oral hygiene, they prevent bad breath and periodontal disease.
Dentures typically accelerate bone loss instead of stopping it, so implants are your best option if you want to protect the length of your face and jaw.
They help patients eat whatever and whenever they want, without any restrictions, improving their appearance and quality of life.
As a result of bone loss and missing teeth, facial sagging and premature signs of aging such as extra wrinkles around the lips, thinning lips, pointed chins, etc. are prevented.
Dental implants: recovery and results
If you are receiving implant treatment, you should take care of your oral hygiene and eating habits. Before your sutures are removed, you should not drink any carbonated beverages, alcohol, or hot food/drink. You should also avoid using a straw. Additionally, you should avoid foods that are too cold, chewy, rough, or spicy. You can eat warm soft and mushy foods such as beans, bananas, soft-serve ice cream, fruit juices, etc.
After the first 24 hours, massage the operated area with a cold compress and avoid spitting. In order to prevent food lodgement in the operated area after 24 hours, you should rinse your mouth with warm salt water after each meal or snack. To ensure there is no infection or delay in healing or osseointegration, you should also schedule regular follow-up appointments with your dentist.
There is a short adjustment period after implant crown placement of one or two weeks where the patient gets used to having the crown in their mouth. Patients with fixed crowns after implant surgery have virtually no dietary restrictions, although they may not be able to eat certain hard-to-chew foods if they receive removable dentures after implant surgery.
After implant placement, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene in order to ensure implant success in the long run. Poor oral hygiene can lead to further gum disease and bone loss. In the absence of adequate support, the implant-supported crown becomes mobile and prone to falling out if there is significant bone loss. Without adequate support, the implant will lose its support, making it easily visible in the oral cavity.
