How does FUE work?

Hair transplant surgery involving follicular unit extraction (FUE), also known as follicular transfer (FT), is an advanced procedure. As a replacement for follicular unit transplantation, this technique involves grafting individual hair follicles from the scalp into areas where bald patches exist. It has become extremely popular over the last few decades, and many people prefer it over other hair transplantation methods.

People's hair growth cycle is affected as they age. Their follicles can no longer regenerate hair, so they are replaced by new follicles that can still grow hair. In areas where hair is thin or not growing at all, new hair will begin to grow once the newly implanted hair follicles receive sufficient blood flow.

What happens in FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)?

The steps involved in FUE hair transplant surgery are as follows:

  • Local anesthesia is administered to numb the back of the scalp or donor area.

  • A surgeon's skill level and the availability of instruments will determine the method used to remove the graft.

  • Grafts are typically extracted one by one using a punch device or 3rd generation micromotor.

  • Punch grafts are extracted from the scalp in the range of 0.6 to 0.9 mm.

  • A technician examines each graft carefully under magnification before separating it for transplantation. Only good grafts are used.

  • A forceps or implanter is used to insert the grafts into the scalp. Most often, a pocket is created for each graft before it is placed carefully.

  • To achieve the best results, the surgeon determines the angle at which the hair will be implanted, its direction, and its density.

  • Following the extraction, the surgeon prepares the recipient area according to the patient's expectations and the donor area's limitations.

  • Recipient areas are left open, and the patient is given instructions on how to care for the grafts.

  • The recipient and donor areas are sterilized again after implantation, and a bandage is placed around the donor area.

During surgery, the recipient area is left open, and the patient is given instructions on how to care for the grafts.

FUE Hair Transplant Side Effects

FUE hair transplants can cause the following side effects:

  • The donor and recipient areas will be numb and sore for 1-2 days following surgery.

  • After the procedure, the head will swell for 2 to 5 days. The swelling may persist for longer.

  • Hair loss may occur as a result of shock loss, but it is a natural process.

  • When scabs form, the scalp may itch.

  • Once the new hair starts growing, the redness in the donor area will disappear.

  • Inflamed hair follicles may form foliculitis or pimples.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Benefits

In many ways, FUE hair transplantation is beneficial to patients.

  • As FUE removes individual follicles from the scalp, it leaves a tiny circular scar on the scalp instead of a linear scar like FUT.

  • Smaller wounds heal faster than larger ones. Because the punch blade makes a small hole less than 1 mm in diameter, the skin heals quickly. Instead of healing over 2-4 weeks, the skin will heal in a week.

  • Punched holes don't require stitches, so the wound can heal on its own without stitches.

  • A minimally invasive technique, FUE allows the surgeon to harvest healthy follicles precisely and maintain hair quality. Since the survival rate of grafts taken through FUE is greater than 90%, the results are superior.

  • The level of discomfort after FUE transplant is minimal. Since the technique is not intrusive, the damage to the scalp is less. You won't have to worry about tearing stitches or creating tension on your head.

  • FUE transplants are minimally invasive, so patients are able to recover quickly. There will be less downtime, and daily activities can be resumed more quickly.

  • The loss of hair can negatively affect a person's self-esteem and confidence. Restoring the hair restores the individual's self-esteem and confidence.

After FUE: Dos and Don'ts

Dos

  • Lift your upper body and sleep in an elevated position to prevent dislodging your grafts.

  • When the bandages have been removed, wash your hair carefully with warm water. Be gentle until the scalp has healed completely.

  • Before resuming your normal routine, wait at least 10 days.

  • Rest and heal your body.

  • To promote healing and maintain healthy hair, eat a healthy, balanced diet.

  • Maintain proper follow-ups with your doctor to ensure the grafted hair is healthy and the skin is healing properly.

Don’ts

  • Drinking alcohol can act as a blood thinner and affect healing.

  • After a FUE transplant, do not engage in sexual activity for 3-5 days.

  • You should not rub or scratch your head until the wound has healed.

  • For best results, quit smoking for at least a month.

  • You should avoid direct sun exposure and apply sunscreen if you are going out.

  • Exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided.

  • Until your doctor approves, do not use chemical products on your scalp.

  • For 4 weeks, do not wear a helmet, cap, or anything covering your head.
