FUT - what is it?

During hair restoration surgery, follicular unit transplants are performed by harvesting a long, thin strip/line of healthy and hair-bearing skin and transplanting it to the area where significant hair loss has occurred. Hair is usually grown for life on the scalp, making it immune to hair loss, so the strip is usually chosen from there.

It is divided into segments and then prepared for implantation into the targeted areas. This technique produces extremely successful results. It can improve your hairline and give you a head full of hair.

In FUT, what happens?

The Follicular Unit Transplant technique involves taking a strip of skin from the back of the head. The size of the strip depends on how many hairs are needed to cover the bald spot. An individual hair follicle is then removed from the strip and transplanted into the scalp. It typically measures 0.4 to 1.5 cm (0.4 to 0.6 inches) wide.

The steps involved in FUT hair transplantation are as follows:

  • A local anesthesia is administered to numb the scalp region. The patient remains awake during the procedure but doesn't feel any pain.

  • The surgeon will mark the area of hair extraction and redraw the hairline to implant the follicles.

  • Before your surgery, you will be given the option to take a sedative and have photographs taken of your scalp for your medical records.

  • In order to make the skin strip removal process easier, the hair length at the donor site is trimmed to around 2 mm.

  • A strip of skin will then be excised for use as a graft by the surgeon.

  • The hair follicles will be carefully removed from the strip and prepared for transplantation by a technician.

  • Sutures are properly placed in the scalp area where the strip is taken.

  • Using minuscule forceps, the surgeon inserts the hair follicles into the recipient area, making sure that the hair follicles cover your bald area properly and look natural.

  • The surgeon will apply antibiotics to the scalp and cover it with bandages once all the hair follicles have been implanted.

Depending on how many hair follicles need to be implanted, the procedure may take 4 to 8 hours.

The benefits and side effects of FUT hair transplantation

FUT benefits

The following are the advantages of Follicular Hair Transplantation (FUT):

  • The resulting hair growth looks completely natural as each hair follicle is transplanted carefully in the bald area.

  • In FUT, only very small, linear incisions are made in the scalp, and after the skin heals, and the hair grows back, these scars are nearly undetectable.

  • In this technique, the hair graft is taken from the area with the healthiest and most permanent hair. During the procedure, the protective tissue is also kept intact so that the grafts retain their quality and life.

  • This type of transplant is quite affordable, despite grafting a large number of hair follicles.

  • Compared to FUE or other hair transplant techniques, this surgery takes less time.

FUT Hair Transplant Side Effects

As the head gets ample blood supply, healing is quick, and there is less likelihood of developing an infection during or after FUT.

The following are some possible side effects:

  • Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles

  • A feeling of numbness in the recipient or donor area

  • Excess fluid causes swelling or edema

  • A sudden loss of native hair (usually temporary)

  • Specifically, epidermal cysts caused by ingrown hairs

You should talk to your hair transplant surgeon if you experience any or all of these side effects.

After FUT: Dos and Don'ts

Dos

  • Protect your scalp from harmful elements while outdoors by covering it thoroughly.

  • While sleeping, elevate your head to prevent anything from coming in contact with the grafted hair.

  • When washing your hair, be gentle and opt for a mild shampoo to avoid any irritation on the scalp.

  • Leave the shampoo on for a bit longer so that any scabs can soften and be easily washed away.

  • If necessary, use a skin moisturizer to relieve itching.

  • After 3 months, you can start wearing regular caps to cover your head.

Don’ts

  • For the first 2-3 days, refrain from touching or washing your hair.

  • Additionally, it is important to avoid consuming alcohol while taking prescribed medications.

  • Smoking should also be avoided as it can hinder the healing process.

  • As for the recipient area, try not to touch, scratch, or rub it for at least 4 days after surgery.

  • Similarly, staying out of direct sunlight is advisable to prevent sunburn and pigmentation on the scalp and damage to transplanted hair.

  • To ensure a successful recovery, strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a month to prevent tension on the donor area at the back of your head.

  • Lastly, please refrain from cutting or styling the rest of your hair until approved by a medical professional within the first few months.

Timeline for recovery

It takes 10-20 days for the FUT hair transplant to heal, and 3 to 6 months for the regrowth to begin.

  • A follow-up will be required the day after surgery, as well as a follow-up within 10-14 days, when the sutures in the donor area will be removed, and the doctor will examine whether the scalp is healing correctly.

  • As the transplanted and donor skin heals, you will experience discomfort and scabs will form.

  • Some of the transplanted hair may fall out within the first month, which is completely normal.

  • In 2-3 months, the transplanted hair will begin to grow, but it will be thin and fine.

  • After 4-6 months, the hair growth will be more visible and new thicker hair will grow. The donor scar will also become mature.

  • With time, your hair will continue to grow thicker and longer. You can begin styling it however you like.
