What is Ear Infection?
The inflammation of the outer, middle, or inner ear is known as an ear infection. There are three types of ear infection- Otitis media, Otitis interna, and Otitis externa. Children are more likely to get an ear infection. Antibiotics and conservative therapies can usually be used to treat ear infections. However, if they become chronic, they can lead to hearing problems and serious complications. Surgery may be necessary.
A common cold, flu, or airborne allergies can also cause ear infections. The most common cause of ear infections is bacteria or viruses.

Ear Infection Treatment
Usually, ear infections can fade away on their own. If not, the doctor may recommend antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Surgery may be necessary when medications or conservative management do not work. According to the type and severity of your infection, your surgeon may prescribe the following surgeries:
Myringoplasty: During this treatment, a graft patch is used to repair the eardrum and prevent infection from entering the ear. It is only recommended if the mastoid bone is not infected.
Stapedectomy: To restore hearing ability and treat middle ear damage caused by otosclerosis, this treatment is recommended.
Bilateral myringotomy and tubes: To allow fluid to drain out, a tiny tube is implanted within the eardrum.
Canal wall down mastoidectomy: If the ear canal has been damaged by an ear infection, this treatment is recommended.
Tympanoplasty: In this procedure, the eardrum is fixed with tissue (fascia) taken from beneath the skin. If necessary, cartilage is used to strengthen the eardrum.
Mastoidectomy: This procedure involves cleaning the mastoid bone or middle ear.
Preparation for Ear Infection Surgery
To prepare for the treatment of ear infections, follow these instructions:
Wear no earrings or studs the day of surgery.
It is impossible for you to walk or drive home alone after surgery, so arrange for someone to accompany you and drop you off.
The night before your surgery, do not eat anything.
After surgery, stock up on items such as ointments, hair bands, soft pillows, etc.
Wear an SPF 30 to protect yourself from sun damage.
Before surgery, quit smoking or consuming tobacco. These practices may result in scarring, which can hinder recovery.
Recovery After Surgery
You may receive instructions from your surgeon to speed up your recovery after ear infection surgery. Here are some post-surgical tips to ensure that you heal properly and quickly.
Stay hydrated by avoiding caffeine and drinking plenty of water.
You should elevate your head with two to three pillows. Lying flat can cause swelling around your ears and face.
When washing your face or taking a shower, keep your dressing dry.
In the first few weeks following surgery, avoid strenuous physical activities like heavy weight lifting, stretching exercises, boxing, etc. Start with light walking and gradually increase the exercise after three or four weeks.
You should apply antibiotic ointment regularly after removing the dressing.
After surgery, do not wear goggles for up to two or three weeks.
