What is Myringotomy?
Myringotomy, also known as ear tube surgery, is a medical procedure performed to alleviate issues related to the middle ear. It is a surgical procedure that involves making an incision in the eardrum (tympanic membrane) to relieve pressure caused by excessive buildup of fluid or to drain pus from the middle ear.
To prevent reaccumulation of fluid in the middle ear and to keep it aerated for a prolonged period of time, a tympanostomy tube may be inserted through the eardrum. A tube is either naturally extruded in 6 to 12 months or removed during a minor procedure if the incision is not inserted. Incisions without tubes usually heal spontaneously within two to three weeks.

Diagnosis of Surgery
Before surgery, a healthcare provider typically recommends several diagnostic tests to assess the severity of the condition and detect any underlying health issues that could complicate the procedure. This process usually begins with a physical examination during which the doctor reviews the patient's medical history to determine the cause of the ear infection. The next step is an inspection of the ear canal using an otoscope, equipped with a light and camera for a better view of the inner ear. In certain cases, a pneumatic otoscope may be used by the surgeon to assess eardrum movement and detect any fluid buildup in the middle ear.
Additionally, a surgeon may suggest some hearing tests such as audiometry, tympanograms, tuning fork tests, and tympanometry to determine the severity of the patient's hearing loss.
Myringotomy surgery procedure
Myringotomy is a surgical procedure performed to relieve pressure and drain fluid from the middle ear. It is commonly recommended for chronic otitis media with effusion or recurrent ear infections.
There are several steps involved in myringotomy surgery. Before the surgery, general anaesthesia is administered, and the ear and surrounding area is cleaned. The lower part of the eardrum is incised, and any accumulated fluid or pus is suctioned out with a tube during the surgery.
As a result of the surgeon's judgement, a myringotomy tube (grommet or tympanostomy tube) is inserted into the incision for ventilation and to prevent fluid buildup. While the tube remains in place for several months, it typically heals on its own with time. However, once the tube has served its purpose and the middle ear has healed, it naturally extrudes (falls out) on its own.
Benefits of Myringotomy
Myringotomy surgery has several benefits, including
Due to chronic fluid buildup in the ear canal, it restores hearing and prevents further hearing loss.
In the primitive years of childhood, it prevents delayed speech development due to hearing loss.
In addition to equalising pressure in the eustachian tubes, it restores the patient's balance.
Recurrent ear infections with effusion or ear infections that do not respond to conservative treatment are very effectively treated with this method.
Furthermore, it helps manage the side effects/complications of chronic ear infections such as sinus infections and eye infections.
