What is Thyroidectomy?
A thyroidectomy is the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland in the event of severe thyroid infections. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped, bilobed gland located at the base of the neck that produces hormones that help the body function. In case of thyroid cancer, thyroid enlargement (goitre), hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules, etc., thyroidectomy is the most effective treatment.
Medical management is the most commonly used treatment for thyroid problems, but surgery is sometimes necessary. Surgery becomes necessary if there are nodules or cancerous growths on the thyroid gland, or if medical management is not providing adequate relief.

Diagnosis of Thyroidectomy
To ensure a successful thyroidectomy surgery and a quick recovery, a thorough diagnosis is performed before surgery. Diagnostic procedures include:-
Tissue biopsy: To determine if a patient has metastatic thyroid cancer, a thyroid biopsy may be performed if there is a suspicious growth on the thyroid gland.
Blood tests: The presence of thyroid problems can be determined by measuring thyroxine (T4 hormone) and thyroid-stimulating hormones in the blood.
Thyroid activity tests: Imaging tests such as thyroid scans, radioiodine uptake tests, thyroid ultrasounds, etc., are used to determine whether the thyroid gland is active and whether cysts, nodules, or tumours exist.
Physical examination: Your ENT specialist will gather your entire medical and family history and assess the state of your thyroid problems. In addition, they will examine your thyroid gland to see if there are any abnormalities. If any, they will recommend appropriate imaging and diagnostic tests.
Preparation for Surgery
Prior to the surgery, the surgeon will perform extensive diagnostic and imaging tests to determine how much thyroid tissue needs to be removed.
You should stop blood thinners or similar medicines at least a couple of days before the procedure to reduce the risk of complications.
On the day of the surgery, you should not eat anything after midnight, and you should arrange for someone to drive you home afterward.
Benefits of Surgery
Endoscopic thyroidectomy is relatively noninvasive, so it results in a minimal amount of surgical trauma to the thyroid gland's surrounding tissues. It is a safe and precise operation in which only the affected part of the thyroid gland is removed and the rest can be preserved easily.
Because the surgery is performed through the axilla, the patient remains scar-free in their neck, and even on the axilla, the scars are barely noticeable. Since there is very little surgical trauma, recovery is quick, the patient heals much faster, and the chances of postoperative complications are very low.
