What is MTP?
Medical termination of pregnancy, also known as medical abortion, involves using medications rather than surgery to end a pregnancy. This procedure, which can be done as soon as a pregnancy is detected and up until the 8th or 9th week, works by blocking the effects of progesterone hormone, which is essential in maintaining a pregnancy.
What happens in MTP?
Following are the steps involved in a medication abortion:
To determine if you are fit for an MTP, your gynaecologist will conduct a clinical assessment of your health, as well as a few blood tests and ultrasounds.
In order to help you make an informed decision about abortion, the gynaecologist will provide all the information you need about the procedure and the impact it can have on your life before conducting a medical abortion, since it is a very sensitive decision. In order to prepare you better for the procedure, your doctor will also inform you about the pain involved.
Your doctor will ask you to sign a consent form that contains all the relevant information about what to expect after the abortion and how to care for yourself.
A Mifepristone tablet, the first pill of the two abortion pills used for medical abortion, will be given to you after the formalities are completed. A tablet like Mifepristone can be taken either at home or at the doctor's clinic. It prevents pregnancy from progressing by blocking the action of progesterone.
The second tablet, Misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours after taking the first pill. Misoprostol softens the cervix and helps push out the pregnancy.
Once you take the second pill, the abortion is completed within a few hours. After the second pill, you may experience heavy painful bleeding that can last for several days to two weeks. Large blood clots (up to the size of a lemon) or clumps of tissue may appear along with bleeding. The cramps and bleeding are usually very heavy, and the process is similar to an early miscarriage in many ways.
Note- Your nurse or doctor should be contacted if you do not have bleeding within 24 hours of taking the second medicine, misoprostol.
Who should not get a medical abortion?
Chronic adrenaline deficiency
Is too far along in the pregnancy
Has an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that takes place outside of the uterus)
Corticosteroids should be used long-term
An intrauterine device is present
Has an allergy to medicines
Consult your gynaecologist about your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for the MTP procedure.
Benefits of medical abortion
