About Hernia

Internal organs, tissues, muscles, or fat can push through a weak spot in the abdominal wall to form a hernia. Hernias usually occur within the abdominal cavity, between the chest and hips. Although hernias aren't dangerous, they can get larger and cause life-threatening complications if left untreated.

Types of Hernia

Females and males can suffer from hernias. Some common types include:

  • Inguinal Hernia : Inguinal hernias are the most common type of hernia that occurs in the groyne region when a part or section of the intestine or bladder pushes through the abdominal wall or into the inguinal canal.

  • Umbilical Hernia : The intestine protrudes through the weak abdominal muscles around the navel or belly button in this type of hernia. It usually occurs in infants and usually resolves within a year.

  • Hiatal Hernia : When the opening in the diaphragm, through which the oesophagus passes, widens, the stomach pushes through, causing a bulge in the chest.

  • Femoral Hernia : Femoral hernias develop in females most commonly when internal organs or tissues push through the groyne around the femoral artery in the upper thigh.

  • Incisional Hernia : An incisional hernia occurs when the intestine or other organs push through weak scar tissue in the abdominal wall following a surgical incision.

There are also other types of hernias, such as epigastric hernias, spigelian hernias, congenital diaphragmatic hernias, and perineal hernias. Hernias often cause discomfort, pain, and bulges in the affected area. Although they may be left untreated initially, they must be monitored carefully in order to prevent complications and alleviate symptoms. Surgical hernia repair may be required if the condition progresses.

Treatment for Hernia - Options

Hernias can be repaired in two ways: herniorrhaphy (tension repair) and hernioplasty (mesh repair). Herniorrhaphy refers to repairing the abdominal wall without any support. Hernioplasty is the process of repairing the wall with the help of hernia mesh, which serves as a reinforcement. Most hernias nowadays are repaired with hernioplasty, which is also known as tension-free hernia repair.

Hernia surgery can be performed in the following ways:

  • Open Hernia Surgery : A typical method for addressing a hernia is to create a cut in the skin, allowing the surgeon to reach the affected tissues and return them to their proper place inside the abdomen. After completing the repair, the surgeon then sews together the healthy tissue edges in order to close up the opening in the abdominal wall. Another commonly used approach involves using a man-made mesh that covers the weakened area of the abdominal wall in order to provide reinforcement and reduce chances of recurrence. The mesh is either stitched or secured with surgical staples during this procedure.

  • Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery : During laparoscopic hernia procedures, the surgeon has two options: a TEP or TAPP approach. With TEP, the hernia is repaired externally without entering the peritoneal cavity. On the other hand, with TAPP, the surgeon enters the peritoneal cavity and inserts a mesh to strengthen the abdominal wall. Both of these methods are minimally invasive, using small incisions and a laparoscope for clear internal visuals. This technique has proven to have low risk and higher success rates compared to traditional open surgery for hernias.

  • Robotic Hernia Surgery : Robotic hernia surgery is quite similar to laparoscopic hernia surgery, but instead of performing the procedure directly, the surgeon uses robotic arms for enhanced dexterity and precision.

The choice of surgical technique depends on the type of hernia, the surgeon's expertise, and the patient's preference.

Home Remedies for Hernia

Despite the fact that home remedies cannot repair a hernia, they can provide temporary relief from mild to moderate symptoms. Here are some home remedies for hernia treatment at home:

  • To avoid putting extra pressure on the abdomen, avoid large meals and opt for smaller, more frequent meals.

  • You should limit the consumption of foods that can cause gas, bloating, and irritation, such as carbonated beverages, cruciferous vegetables, beans, and acidic foods.

  • Warm compresses can relieve discomfort by relaxing the muscles and reducing inflammation in the surrounding tissues.

  • After consulting a homoeopathic doctor, try homoeopathic medicines for hernia, such as Nux Vomica, Calcarea carbonica, Lycopodium Clavatum, Belladonna, etc.

  • Ayurvedic medicines with analgesic properties, such as Triphala and Gandhak Rasayana, can help.

These home remedies for hernia may not be effective for everyone, and they are not a cure.

Hernia Exercises

Despite the fact that home remedies cannot actually repair a hernia, they can provide temporary relief from mild to moderate symptoms. Here are some home remedies to manage hernia symptoms at home:

Hernia patients can safely perform the following exercises:

  • Deep breathing exercises : Engage in gentle diaphragmatic breathing exercises to strengthen and relax the diaphragm muscles.

  • Pelvic floor exercises : Strengthening and stabilising the core can be achieved through Kegel exercises, which involve contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles.

  • Gentle core : Exercises like pelvic tilts, gentle leg lifts, etc., may help gently engage core muscles without straining the abdominals.

  • Walking : Low-impact exercises can improve circulation, promote healing, and gradually strengthen muscles.
