What is Umbilical Hernia Surgery?
The repair of umbilical hernias involves pushing the herniated organ back into its original position and closing the perforation around the navel. This type of hernia is particularly problematic for children.
In adults, the surgery can be performed electively. However, in children, it is delayed until 4-5 years of age.
Types of Surgery
An umbilical hernia can only be treated by surgery. The doctor will push the protruding organ back to its original position and repair the hole in the muscle wall.
Herniorrhaphy (Tissue Repair)
By stitching the sides of the muscle opening, this type of hernia repair can close the hole in the muscle wall. In this case, additional support is not required, and the internal organs will not be pushed through the muscle tissues over time.
Hernioplasty (Mesh Repair)
This kind of hernia repair surgery uses synthetic or artificial mesh as reinforcements. It is often referred to as mesh repair surgery. To prevent the organ from pushing through the muscle wall, mesh pieces are precisely cut into the shape of the hole and placed above and beneath the muscle tissues. The edges of the mesh are stitched with the muscles to prevent displacement.
Using open or laparoscopic techniques, both procedures are safe and effective for treating hernias.
Benefits of Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery
For umbilical hernia repair, krescent Healthcare uses the laparoscopic technique because it is beneficial in the following ways:
During the procedure, keyhole-sized incisions are made, making the surgery minimally invasive.
There is minimal scarring after surgery since only a limited amount of skin tissue is cut.
Compared to open surgery, there is less risk of bleeding and infection.
Since laparoscopic hernia repair doesn't require prolonged hospitalisation, the patient is discharged the same day.
Post-surgery complications are rare, and the recovery is quick.
Due to the lack of a large external wound, the patient can resume normal activities sooner.
Surgery Recovery & Results
After umbilical hernia surgery, recovery typically lasts from 3-6 weeks. The actual recovery period varies from patient to patient, depending on the technique used during the procedure and the patient's ability to heal. If the patient is healthy and open repair is done, recovery will take around 4-6 weeks. If laparoscopic repair is done, recovery will take around 3-4 weeks.
Recovery will be prolonged if the patient's health is not optimal.
After an umbilical hernia repair, there will be some bruising and swelling at the surgical site. As the organ is pushed back, the bulge will disappear completely.
How to prepare for the surgery?
Follow the steps below to prepare for umbilical hernia surgery:
6-8 hours before surgery, do not eat or drink anything.
In order to prepare the body for surgery, provide the doctor with a list of medicines.
In order to determine which anaesthesia is appropriate for the procedure, the anaesthetist will ask a series of questions.
At least a week before surgery, the doctor will ask you to stop taking aspirin, blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medicines, etc., since they increase the risk of bleeding.
To eliminate the risk of any underlying conditions compromising the outcome or success rate of the surgical procedure, get a full-body checkup.
Before being admitted to the hospital, take a shower and dress comfortably.
Stay with a friend or family member.
