Femto LASIK: what is it?
As with other refractive laser surgeries, femtosecond-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) involves reshaping the cornea to improve vision.
Femto lasers were developed in the early 1990s and quickly became popular because they allowed surgeons to create corneal flaps using lasers rather than mechanical cutting tools (microkeratomes). As a result of this flap creation method, no sutures are required to place the flap back in place.
In LASIK, the flap is prepared with a microkeratome (small blade), while in Femto LASIK, the flap is cut with a Femto laser, thus making the surgery bladeless.
FemtoLASIK Candidate
Candidates for LASIK should meet the following criteria:
Surgery can only be performed on adults 18 years and older.
In individuals whose refractive power is still changing, LASIK is not a good option.
Healing abilities are important for an individual.
If LASIK is performed on people who have thin corneas, there is a higher risk of blindness.
Femto LASIK is not available to individuals who have had refractive surgery in the past.
Femto LASIK: How does it work?
By modifying the corneal shape, Femto LASIK treats refractive errors. Refractive errors occur when the light is not focused properly due to an improper corneal shape.
To correct myopia or nearsightedness, the laser reduces the cornea's curvature.
In order to correct hyperopia or farsightedness, the laser increases the curvature of the cornea.
Femto LASIK works by addressing irregularities in the corneal tissues so that light falls at the retina.
Lasers correct presbyopia by improving the lens' flexibility.
FemtoLASIK Preparation
The patient should meet with the surgeon before the surgery and discuss his or her goals, risk factors, and expected results. The surgeon will advise the patient to remember to keep realistic expectations and also explain all the risks and benefits of the surgery.
The doctor will advise the patient not to wear contact lenses for at least 1-3 weeks before the treatment. The exact duration will vary based on the type of contact lens.
The doctor will examine your eyes before surgery, use the results to guide the laser, and ask you to submit your insurance documents for cashless treatment if the laser can cover the surgery cost.
As the vision may be hazy after surgery, the patient should ask someone to accompany him/her.
Recovery & Results
It usually takes 1 to 2 hours for the patient's vision to improve after Femto LASIK surgery. It usually takes 2 to 4 weeks for the patient to recover completely. During recovery, the patient will need to follow the following instructions:
Rubbing your eyes can dislodge the flap and cause further problems.
The eye shield provided after surgery should be worn for 1-2 days to prevent rubbing the eye. The eye shield will also prevent dust, dirt, and smoke from entering the eye.
Do not engage in activities that can strain or damage your eyes.
Until the doctor permits, avoid washing your face or taking a shower.
Make an appointment with the surgeon within 1-3 days of the surgery to have your eyes checked.
Follow the doctor's instructions regarding tear drops, steroid drops, eye gel, and other medications.
During the first few months after surgery, your vision may fluctuate. It's normal, but if your vision changes drastically, please consult your doctor.
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled by the medical team. Continue to see the doctor for at least six months after surgery.
Until your doctor permits it, do not swim or use a bathtub.
