How does SMILE LASIK work?
The ReLEx SMILE laser surgery is an innovative alternative to LASIK surgery for people with severe myopia or shortsightedness. It is a bladeless, minimally invasive procedure.
It is relatively new in India, but more than 3 million eyes have been corrected using SMILE worldwide.SMILE is considered to be better than other types of LASIK surgery in some respects because it may provide biomechanical stability to the cornea and spares the anterior corneal lamellar tissues.
SMILE LASIK is suitable for whom?
Many people are eligible for SMILE, especially those who are not eligible for standard LASIK or LASEK. Generally, these factors make an individual unsuitable for other types of LASIK but suitable for SMILE LASIK:
From 1 D to 10 D, the patient has a higher degree of myopia.
There is a thin layer of corneal tissue on the patient's eye.
Contact lenses are intolerable to the patient.
Mild to moderate dry eyes are diagnosed in the patient.
The eye doctor makes the final decision whether to perform SMILE LASIK on the patient. He or she will examine the patient's eyes and determine whether or not the procedure will be beneficial.
SMILE LASIK Risks & Side Effects
The doctor clarifies the risks and benefits of SMILE LASIK before recommending it to a patient. Here are some common risks.
When mid-corneal tissues are separated and removed during this procedure, there is a risk of incomplete tissue removal, which can result in corneal abrasions, adhesions, and incisional tears. Debris can be cleared out with non-invasive methods if detected earlier. The patient may need to undergo a second surgery to remove the debris in extreme cases.
Inflammation is a normal side effect of surgical procedures, which eventually subsides. However, it may last for some time.
Since SMILE is designed to correct nearsightedness, there is a higher chance of hazy vision after the procedure. This can last for up to one month.
One of the most common side effects of laser eye surgeries is dry eyes, and SMILE patients also have this risk. When a flap is created, the nerves of the eye are damaged, causing the eye to not recognize the need for moisture, resulting in the eye producing fewer tears. As a result, SMILE is much less likely to cause dryness due to nerve damage.
A patient's eye power may be overcorrected or undercorrected, and this can result in worse vision than before the surgery, requiring revision surgery.
Up to 6 months after the surgery, patients may experience increased corneal sensitivity due to corneal weakening and tensile strength loss.
SMILE LASIK Surgery Benefits
SMILE LASIK has significant advantages over other types of laser eye surgery.
SMILE LASIK can usually be performed for people with refractive errors, even if they are not good candidates for LASIK or other laser eye surgery.
In this surgery, no flap is created, so there is no risk of flap-related complications. The flap will not move or fold during the surgery.
The entire surgery takes only 15 to 30 minutes, like all other types of vision correction surgeries.
Patient discomfort is reduced after SMILE, and recovery is quick.
SMILE eye surgery improves vision by up to 80% within a few hours.
As SMILE does not create a flap, there is minimal risk of dry eyes.
Biomechanical strength of the cornea is not diminished.
With SMILE, your vision is more precise and stable.
SMILE does not affect the patient's ability to see clearly in low light, unlike other types of LASIK surgery.
SMILE LASIK Recovery & Results
The results of SMILE LASIK appear within a few hours. However, it takes 1 to 6 months for the vision to stabilize. The exact timeline depends on each patient. Recovery from the surgery will take around 2-4 weeks. The patient must follow these instructions carefully throughout this period.
Use the prescribed medications as directed by your doctor in the initial days of the illness.
Protect your eyes by wearing an eye shield or protective cover.
Showering and bathing can cause irritation to the eyes, so avoid getting water in them.
Exercise, even low-impact exercises, should be avoided in the first few days.
For at least one week, do not use makeup, face creams, moisturizers, or other products.
While the eye is healing, stay away from smoke, dust, and even steam. These airborne particles can cause irritation and discomfort.
Follow up with the doctor as recommended to monitor your visual recovery.
