What is arthroscopy?

An arthroscopy is a minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery to diagnose and treat joint issues. It is generally performed when the surgeon wants to examine the inside of the joint without damaging the surrounding tissues.

A narrow tube with a fibre-optic video camera is attached to the scope, which is generally inserted through tiny incisions during the procedure. In order to diagnose and treat patients, video is captured and transmitted to a high-definition monitor through the scope.

In general, it is performed on weight-bearing joints such as the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist. When the imaging tests do not provide a clear picture of the problem and the surgeon cannot determine the cause despite a thorough conservative examination, it is reserved as the last option. In contrast, it is the most preferred surgical procedure because it provides a quick recovery with minimal complications.

preparation for Surgery

Before undergoing arthroscopic surgery, you should follow the following preparation steps:

1. It is important that your surgeon knows your entire medical history and allergies so that he or she can prepare accordingly. You may need to stop taking medications such as blood thinners, clotters, etc., that may interfere with healing or cause complications during surgery.

2. You should leave all your valuables at home, such as watches, jewellery, etc.

3. Depending on the type of anaesthesia you are under, you may need to fast 8-12 hours before the surgery.

4. If you undergo arthroscopic joint replacement surgery, you may need an attendant to help you during the first few days after surgery, since you may not be able to drive yourself home.

5. Make sure you wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing in the days following surgery so that you can recover more quickly.

How does arthroscopy work?

In order to determine what the best treatment option would be for the patient, an orthopedist performs a thorough diagnosis before arthroscopy. Before surgery, imaging tests are generally performed, including X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasounds, etc. Before arthroscopic orthopaedic surgery, imaging tests are commonly performed.

Depending on the type of surgery and the joint being operated on, the orthopaedic surgeon will discuss various treatment options with the patient. Arthroscopic surgery can be performed under general or regional anaesthesia.

A tiny (3-4 mm – about the size of a buttonhole) incision is made by the surgeon to insert the scope and surgical instruments after the anaesthesia has taken effect. It is generally possible to finish the surgery with minimal damage to the surrounding tissues. After the surgery is completed, the incisions are closed and bandaged.

Benefits

Arthroscopy has the following advantages over traditional open surgery:

1. Incisions that are smaller

2. Diagnoses that are more accurate

3. Surgery takes less time

4. Inflammation and pain after surgery are reduced

5. There is minimal trauma to the soft tissues surrounding the surgical site

6. Postoperative pain is reduced

7. Recovery time is quicker

8. Postoperative complications are less likely

Recovery after Surgery

To improve your recovery after arthroscopic surgery, follow these tips:

1. To prevent infection and manage pain, take your medication as prescribed.

2. In the first 24 hours after surgery, apply ice to the incision to reduce swelling. Elevate the knee with pillows, folded blankets, etc., to alleviate leg discomfort.

3. Alcohol and smoking can interfere with the patient's ability to recover after surgery.

4. Avoid putting too much weight or pressure on the operated area.

5. Until your recovery is complete, keep up with your physiotherapy schedule.

6. When showering, taking a bath, etc., wrap the incision in plastic wrap until it has completely healed.

7. Your physiotherapist may recommend assistive devices such as crutches, splints, slings, walkers, etc.
