What is the treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome?
In most cases, carpal tunnel release surgery is the most effective way to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. It has proven effective in eliminating all symptoms of the condition as well as preventing damage to the median nerve.
Symptoms that are mild can be relieved with simple measures and precautions like wearing splints and avoiding activities involving extreme wrist movements. If the pressure on the median nerve persists, it can worsen symptoms and damage the nerve severely.
Physiotherapy for carpal tunnel surgery
The recovery process after carpal tunnel release surgery is much longer if the patient fails to follow proper rehabilitation and physiotherapy. By performing physiotherapy, scar tissue is prevented from building up in the operated region and the tunnel in the wrist is opened up, allowing proper wrist function. In addition to physiotherapy, patients should also wear assistive devices such as thumb splints to promote recovery, in addition to regaining a complete range of motion for the wrist.
Following carpal tunnel surgery, you should perform the following exercises:
Tendon gliding: Keep your fingers together and bend them at a 900 angle towards the first knuckle. Then bend them towards the second knuckle and make a fist. Open your hand and repeat the process five to ten times.
Wrist flexion and stretch: Hold this position for 10-30 seconds 5-6 times for each hand, with the wrist flexed at a 900 angle.
Finger tip touching: Do this exercise 3 to 5 times, holding your hand palm side up, and touching your thumb with each fingertip in both directions.
Preparation for Surgery
Here are a few tips to help you prepare for carpal tunnel release surgery.
1. Make sure you answer your doctor's questions carefully. Don't forget any details.
2. Preoperative testing helps identify any concerns before surgery by determining our health, age, condition, and the severity of the technique of the surgery.
3. Before surgery, follow your doctor's diet chart.
4. Before surgery, follow your doctor's instructions regarding medications.
Talk to your orthopaedic surgeon about all the medicines you are taking, including OTC medications, supplements, vitamins, and herbs. You will likely be asked to stop taking certain medications before the surgery, such as ibuprofen or aspirin.
You may be asked to refrain from eating or drinking for 6-12 hours before the surgery if you smoke. Smoking can delay healing.
Other preoperative preparations may be required by your orthopaedic surgeon based on your medical condition and history. It is normal for you to undergo preoperative tests such as blood tests or electrocardiograms (ECGs) on the same day as the surgery.
Diagnosis and Procedure
Diagnosis
When you are having a physical exam for carpal tunnel syndrome, your doctor will ask you questions about your symptoms, medical history, occupation, and general health. A number of tests will be performed on your affected hand and wrist during the examination. These tests may include the following.
1. Try tapping along or pressing down the median nerve on the inside of your wrist to see if any numbness or tingling occurs.
2. Test your hand for tingling and numbness by bending and holding your wrist in a flexed position.
3. Check your fingertips' sensitivity by lightly touching them with a special instrument when your eyes are closed
4. At the base of your thumb, check for muscle atrophy
5. The muscles at the base of your thumb may be weak
Procedure
The minimally invasive procedure aims to alleviate the pressure on the median nerve. It utilizes an endoscope - a flexible, thin tube with a camera attached at its tip. Through a small incision in the wrist, the endoscope is inserted for clear visualisation of the internal structure without the need for a larger incision. Once the ligament is located, a small cutting tool is used to release it, thus relieving pressure on the median nerve and effectively treating carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms.
