What is Anal Fistula?
A fistula is a connection or tunnel that forms between the anal canal (the end portion of the digestive tract) and the skin around the anus. Infections or abscesses (collections of pus) in the anal glands, which are located near the anus, are most likely to cause it.
In addition to persistent pain around the anus, swelling, redness, tenderness, and fluid discharge, anal fistulas may also cause itching, fever, and general malaise.
Home remedies for Anal Fistula
Anal fistula symptoms can often be relieved with these home remedies.
Aloe vera Gel : A thin layer of aloe vera gel can be applied daily to the affected area to treat anal fistula. It has anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties.
Apple Cider Vinegar : With its antibacterial properties, apple cider vinegar is a natural remedy for anal fistula. Apply it to the affected area with a cotton ball, diluted with water. However, medical treatment may be needed.
Cloves : Anal fistulas can be treated naturally with cloves. Their anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce pain and swelling. Mix ground cloves with coconut oil and apply to the affected area. Repeat daily if necessary.
Ginger Tea : Adding sliced ginger to hot water and drinking it may help relieve the symptoms of anal fistula.
Oregano Leaves Oil : With its antibacterial properties, oregano oil can help reduce inflammation and promote healing of anal fistulas.
Sitz Bath : Sitting in a warm, shallow bath for 15-20 minutes two to three times a day can be very effective for the treatment of an anal fistula.
Tea Tree Oil : As a natural remedy, tea tree oil may help reduce swelling and pain caused by an anal fistula. However, you should consult with your doctor before using tea tree oil to treat an anal fistula.
Turmeric Milk : To treat anal fistula, mix turmeric powder with warm milk and drink before bed.
Use donut Pillows : These pillows have a round shape with a hole in the middle, which can help relieve pressure and discomfort in anal fistulas.
Witch Hazel : In order to relieve the symptoms of anal fistula, witch hazel can be applied topically to the affected area with a cotton ball. It is anti-inflammatory and can reduce pain and swelling. Before using witch hazel to treat anal fistula, consult your doctor.
Treatment
Anal fistula can be treated surgically or non-surgically.
Surgical Treatment
Advancement Flap Procedure: The advancement flap procedure involves cutting a flap of skin adjacent to the wound and advancing it across the defect to close the wound. It is commonly used for reconstructive surgery on the face, neck, and hands. Advancement flaps repair skin defects caused by trauma, cancer, or congenital malformations.
Fistulotomy: Anal fistulas are treated with fistulotomies, a surgical procedure that involves cutting the fistula and removing infected tissue. The purpose of surgery is to drain the abscess and to prevent it from recurring. An outpatient fistulotomy can be performed under general anaesthesia. In general, fistulotomy is an effective treatment option for anal fistulas, with a high success rate and low risk of recurrence. Complications can include bleeding, infection, and incontinence.
LIFT(Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract): A fistula tract is tied near the internal anal sphincter muscle using this surgical technique. Using a special tool, the LIFT procedure locates the internal opening of the fistula by making an incision near the skin near the fistula. In order to prevent the fistula from recurring, the internal opening is then closed off with a suture.
Section Placement: In a Seton placement, a small piece of plastic or rubber is placed within the body to drain fluids. Setons are commonly used to drain abscesses, cysts, and other collections. During Seton placement, a small incision is made and the seton is inserted beneath the skin. A loop is then created in the Seton to allow continuous drainage. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in an outpatient setting. In general, Seton placement is considered safe with minimal risks and complications. In order to ensure successful healing, post-procedure care is crucial.
Laser Surgery: A small probe is inserted into the fistula tract with the aid of an endoscope or other imaging techniques during laser surgery for anal fistulas. In order to seal off the fistula tract, laser energy is delivered through the probe, targeting and destroying the tissues along the tract.
Non Surgical Treatments
Fibrin Glue Injection : Laser energy is delivered through the probe to seal off the fistula tract, targeting and destroying the tissues. Anal fistulas rarely heal without surgical intervention, so non-surgical treatment is not recommended. Surgery is always the best option.
Good Food habits to avoid Anal Fistula
It is important to take care of your diet if you have an anal fistula to prevent further irritation.
Green Leafy Vegetables: Include green leafy vegetables in your diet, such as cabbage, cauliflower, peas, broccoli, beans, bitter gourds, and ridge gourds.
Higher-Fibre Foods: A high-fibre diet can prevent constipation, which can worsen the symptoms of an anal fistula. Examples of high-fibre foods are whole-grain bread, oats, fruits, vegetables, and beans.
Lean Proteins: Lean protein sources such as chicken, fish, and tofu can aid in the healing process.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Inflammation in the body can be reduced by omega-3 fatty acids. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.
Probiotic-Rich Foods: Probiotics are good bacteria that help maintain a healthy digestive system and prevent infections. Foods that are rich in probiotics include yoghurt, buttermilk, apple, green peas, and cottage cheese.
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of juices and water to keep your digestive system healthy. Avoid spicy and acidic foods, which can irritate your anal ar
Signs of Healing Fistula
Fistulas heal by showing signs of improvement. Common signs of healing fistulas include:
Decreased or Resolved Symptoms: The anal area may experience less pain, swelling, tenderness, and discomfort as the fistula heals.
Healing Infections: Redness, swelling, warmth, and pus formation are likely to stop when an anal fistula heals.
Improved Bowel Movements: Defecation or difficulty passing stool will improve once the anal fistula heals.
Lesser Discharge: Fistula drainage may also decrease or stop completely.
You should not stop taking your prescribed medications once you notice these signs. Healing is a gradual process. You should consult with your healthcare provider for proper evaluation and monitoring of your fistula's healing.
