What is Laser Surgery?
Laser surgery refers to any surgical procedure performed with a laser technique. The term LASER refers to amplification of light by stimulated emission of radiation. There are various purposes for using light energy, including cutting and eliminating soft tissues. In addition, it promotes healing in various cases, repairing and rejuvenating the tissues.
Light in the form of a laser beam is generated by a special device used in laser surgery. In addition to monochromatic (a single colour), coherent (the same frequency and waveform), and collimated (travelling in the same direction) rays, this device can also be customised. Lasers have continuous or pulsating modes of operation. Laser surgeries are performed using different principles to achieve the desired results.
Laser treatment for piles
Laser treatment for piles, also referred to as laser hemorrhoidoplasty or laser hemorrhoidectomy, is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes a CO2 laser to reduce inflammation and swelling in the anal tissue. The process involves inserting a small probe into the anal canal, where the laser directs its energy towards the affected area. Through this method, the piles gradually decrease in size and eventually fall off. Compared to traditional surgical techniques, this treatment offers various advantages such as minimal pain, bleeding, and scarring due to its minimally invasive nature. Additionally, patients experience shorter recovery times and can resume their regular activities within just a few days.
In general, laser treatment for piles is not suitable for all patients. The procedure is most effective for patients with small and non-prolapsed piles of grade 1 or grade 2. Patients with larger or prolapsed piles may need a more invasive procedure, such as a traditional hemorrhoidectomy.
Laser Anal Fistula Surgery
Utilising laser energy, the minimalistic approach of anal fistula surgery effectively treats uncomplicated and surface-level fistulas. These small tunnels form between the skin surrounding the anus and the anal passage, typically as a result of an anal gland infection. The procedure involves inserting a small probe into the fistula tract and directing laser energy towards the tissue. This causes vaporisation of the tissue, ultimately creating a pathway for draining the fistula with the use of a CO2 laser.
The procedure has several benefits over traditional techniques, including minimal pain, bleeding, and scarring. Patients with deeper or more complex fistulas may require a more invasive procedure, such as a fistulotomy or fistulectomy.
Laser Circumcision Surgery
As a minimally invasive procedure, laser circumcision surgery is the preferred choice for patients and physicians. Laser energy is used to remove the foreskin of the penis. Phimosis (a tight foreskin that cannot be retracted), balanitis, paraphimosis, foreskin infection, or removal of the foreskin for cultural or personal reasons are some of the conditions treated with this procedure.
A small probe is used to remove the foreskin using CO2 laser energy. The laser promotes scar tissue formation, which results in less bleeding, swelling, and scarring than traditional surgical methods.
Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLT)
By using a catheter, diode laser, and ultrasound, EVLT is effective for treating varicose veins and spider veins. It locates malfunctioning, swollen, and inflamed veins and precisely ablates them. By emitting focused, pulsating light, the laser probe closes/destroys enlarged veins by converting into heat energy.
In this procedure, veins that are still straight and untwisted can be treated. In complex cases, traditional vein ligation and stripping techniques may be more effective than laser treatment in complex cases. Despite being a new approach, it has a high success rate of more than 95%.
