Vascular Surgery: What is it and who performs it?

In vascular surgery, medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction, if necessary, are used to treat medical conditions related to the vascular system. Vascular systems comprise arteries, veins, and lymphatics. Vascular surgery includes operations on the aorta, carotid arteries, and even the lower extremities.

The vascular doctor/surgeon treats all types of diseases of the vascular system. They advise patients how to treat vascular problems through medication, diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes.

Vascular surgeons perform a wide variety of noninvasive procedures as well as complicated surgeries, with the exception of heart and brain surgeries. Their primary concern is determining the best and most effective treatment method for the patient.

What is the best time to see a vascular specialist?

It is common for patients to delay treatment because their symptoms weren’t bad. However, bad is a relative term, so your definition of “bad” problems may differ from that of a vascular specialist. As a result, patients may subconsciously minimize their symptoms, which will result in the symptoms progressing.

To live a long and healthy life, an individual should not ignore the symptoms given below. These symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Elevated toes cause pain, numbness, or soreness

  • Legs or feet that are swollen or inflamed

  • Bulging and enlarging veins

  • Pain or cramping in the thighs, calves, or buttocks that subsides with rest.

  • Skin discoloration on the legs or feet

  • Legs or feet with slow or non-healing wounds

  • When you cut or injure your leg, you may develop ulcers

  • An unrelated pelvic pain, heaviness, or pressure

  • A feeling of acheiness or fatigue during the day

In many cases, vascular problems do not exhibit any symptoms at all, but if you have any of these symptoms, you should see a vascular doctor immediately.

EVLT (EndoVenous Laser Ablation)

By using a catheter, laser, and ultrasound to identify and ablate malfunctioning veins, EVLT is a minimally invasive treatment for spider veins and varicose veins.

This procedure involves inserting a catheter into the affected vein and using ultrasound to obtain clear images of the vein, which is performed by a vascular surgeon and/or interventional radiologist. At the end of the catheter, a laser (at the end of the catheter) is activated. As the catheter is removed, the laser tip ablates the vein and stops the flow of blood.

The patient can resume normal activities the next day after receiving the endovenous laser ablation therapy. The treatment takes about an hour, and the patient is discharged the same day.

Prevent Vascular Diseases by Taking Preventative Measures

If you've suffered from vascular disease in the past or you are at risk of developing it, follow these tips to prevent it:

  • You should control your blood sugar level if you have diabetes to prevent other problems.

  • Engage in physical activity and eat a heart-healthy diet to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • Maintain a healthy blood pressure and cholesterol level.

  • If you smoke, try to quit as soon as possible.

  • If your profession requires you to stand or sit for long periods, wear compression stockings or stretch your legs every now and then to improve circulation.

Surgery to create an Arteriovenous Fistula

In chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, AV fistulas are surgically created using grafts or AV shunts to assist the dialysis process.

As a result of repeated dialysis cycles, AV fistulas function as access points or channels for the dialysis machine to relieve pressure on the arteries and veins. Dialyzers filter out more blood by allowing a larger amount of blood to flow through them. Generally, these are created in the wrist, forearm, inner elbow, or upper arm in patients with severe kidney disease who require chronic vascular access for hemodialysis.
