What is Corn Removal?

During corn removal or foot corn removal, small and thick patches of skin develop on the feet as a result of repeated pressure or friction. Walking or wearing shoes can cause discomfort or pain when corns form on the tops or sides of toes, the ball of the foot, or the heel.

The doctor may recommend over-the-counter treatments for foot corns, such as corn pads, medicated corn removal solutions, etc., but in severe cases, removing corns that have grown deeply into the skin may require manual or surgical removal.

Tests Before Treatment

A corn is a common condition that can usually be diagnosed based on appearance and location on the foot without the need for tests. A doctor may, however, order imaging tests, such as X-rays or an MRI, to evaluate your foot and rule out other possible causes if your corn is unusually large or there is a suspicion of an underlying condition like a bone deformity or nerve problem.

As part of the physical exam, the doctor will evaluate your foot and determine whether surgery is necessary. Additionally, he/she will ask about the footwear and activities that may contribute to the corn development, as well as the patient's medical history, including previous foot injuries or surgeries. A combination of self-care measures, over-the-counter treatments, and surgery may be recommended based on this information.

Techniques Used

Corn can be removed using several techniques, including:

Laser Surgery: A laser is used to vaporise corns and calluses, leaving healthy tissues untouched. The procedure is minimally invasive and requires little to no downtime.

Chemical Removal: After several days, a gentle scrub or pumice stone can easily remove the dead skin by applying a chemical solution to the corn or callus.

Surgery: Surgery may be necessary in more severe cases. This involves cutting out the corn or callus and any underlying bone contributing to the problem. This may require a longer recovery period and may be performed under local or general anaesthetic.

Shaving or Debriding: The surgeon uses a special instrument to gently shave or grind down the corn or callus until it is completely removed. This procedure is quick and painless.

Recovery After Treatment

The patient will generally require 3-4 weeks approximately to recover after foot corn treatment. The exact recovery period will differ for each patient depending on the extent of the problem and the method used for treatment. In the following article, we will provide tips to help the patient recover as quickly as possible.

  • To prevent the development of new corns and promote proper healing, wear footwear that fits well and provides adequate support.

  • Keep regular follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing. Tell your doctor and/or his/her team if you experience any unusual symptoms.

  • To minimise swelling and promote healing, elevate the affected foot above the level of your heart for several days after the procedure.

  • To manage discomfort during recovery, the doctor may prescribe pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers.

  • For a period of time after the procedure, the doctor may advise avoiding weight-bearing activities and strenuous exercise.

  • Dressings or bandages may be applied to the affected area depending on the type of treatment performed. Be sure to follow the doctor's instructions carefully on how to care for the dressing.

Benefits of Treatment

Foot corn treatment has the following benefits:

Improved Foot Health: When foot corn develops and gets treated properly, the individual becomes more aware of proper foot care, improving overall foot health and preventing future problems.

Improved Mobility: The treatment of foot corns can improve mobility and allow individuals to engage in their regular activities without discomfort.

Prevent Formation of New Foot Corns: It is possible to prevent the development of new corn by treating foot corn, especially if the underlying cause is addressed.

Prevent Infection: Untreated corns can lead to infection, which can lead to more serious health problems. Treatment can help prevent infection and promote healing.

Pain Relief: Treatment can help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with foot corns, especially if they are located in areas of high pressure or friction.
