What Is ESWL Treatment?

ESWL, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy, is a minimally invasive option for treating kidney stones using shock waves and x-rays or ultrasounds to break down and aid in the natural passing of the stones. It is most effective for smaller kidney stones and has even avoided the need for major surgery in many cases.

As an outpatient procedure, there is no hospital stay required and recovery time is brief, making it an added benefit. Additionally, the risk of complications after the procedure is significantly low.

Diagnosis

Prior to ESWL surgery, doctors recommend the following tests:

  • Blood test

  • Urinalysis

  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test

  • Imaging tests (X Rays, abdominal ultrasound, MRI)

Procedure

Anaesthesia is typically not required for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

In this procedure, the patient lies on a water-filled tub or cushion to protect the surrounding organs.

To locate the stone, the surgeon uses x-rays or abdominal ultrasounds. Once the stone has been located, the surgeon releases high-energy sound waves that break it into smaller pieces. To break the stone into smaller fragments, surgeons adjust the sound waves' power and intervals accordingly.

The stone is flushed out of the body after it has been broken down into smaller pieces.

According to the size of the stone, the patient's condition, and the surgeon's expertise, the procedure usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes. ESWL is not effective for all types of kidney stones, and it may take multiple sessions to break the stones completely. If there is a large stone, the surgeon may insert a ureteral stent. Stents help smooth the movement of stones and reduce pain during stone expulsion by enlarging the ureteral passage.

Recovery after Surgery

Most patients recover after ESWL surgery within a week. However, some after-care tips can speed up the recovery process, including:

  • For a few weeks after surgery, avoid foods that are too spicy or contain high levels of animal protein.

  • It is best to avoid strenuous activities. However, you can indulge in minimal physical activity.

  • Drink more water.

  • Make your diet more fibre-rich.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any abnormal symptoms.

Preparation for Surgery

The following tips will help you prepare for ESWL. Urologists provide specific instructions before the procedure to help you prepare.

  • Anaesthesia can be delayed if you eat or drink 8 to 9 hours before surgery.

  • If you have any allergies related to anaesthesia, talk to your doctor.

  • Avoid discomfort around the surgical site by wearing loose-fitting clothing.

  • Before ESWL surgery, tell your urologist about any medications you are taking or health conditions you have.

  • Before surgery, don't smoke or consume anything else.
