What is Stapler Circumcision?
The stapler circumcision is a minimally invasive procedure that is used for safe, quick and efficient removal of the penile foreskin. The procedure is performed with an anastomat, an instrument designed specifically for circumcision.
When the stapler is fitted over the penis during surgery, it removes the foreskin in one quick motion and closes the incision with silicone rings/nonbioabsorbable staples. Foreskin removal is extremely safe and provides the desired results for both the patient and the surgeon since the amount to be removed is predetermined in the procedure.
Diagnosis of Stapler Circumcision
Whether a stapler circumcision is medically necessary or not depends on the reason for the surgery. Many patients get circumcised for aesthetic or religious reasons, so a general health checkup is all that is required before the surgery.
Circumcision may be needed for medical reasons if you have pain, infection, or inflammation near the tip of your penis. The surgeon will perform a variety of diagnostic tests, including:
Blood tests: Patients with systemic health issues may require blood tests such as random blood sugar tests, bleeding tests, etc.
Urinalysis: Testing the appearance, concentration, and contents of a patient's urine to determine if the patient has UTIs, kidney problems, etc.
Tissue culture: The discharge is cultured and examined for signs of bacterial or fungal infection if there is any.
Procedure
It is an advanced circumcision procedure that allows for faster recovery and better results than open circumcision. Both general and local anaesthesia are available, although local anaesthesia is preferred.
During anaesthesia, the penis is disinfected and the stapler is applied to it. It is important to fit the device properly to avoid damaging the foreskin and to protect the penis glans. As soon as the stapler is triggered, the foreskin is removed and a silicone ring is used to close the incision.
As a final step, the device is unscrewed and removed, and the penis is pressed with gauze to stop any bleeding. The wound is dressed with a compression bandage, and the patient is taken to a recovery ward for observation.
Preparation Before Surgery
As you may not be able to return to work immediately after surgery, schedule time off from work for at least a couple of days.
In order to prepare for the procedure appropriately, make sure your surgeon has access to your entire medical record, as well as your allergies and medications.
For local anaesthesia, no precautions are required, but for general anaesthesia, you cannot eat or drink after midnight on the day of surgery.
For a few days prior to surgery, avoid consuming alcohol and tobacco (smoking, gutka, beedi, etc.) as they may slow down your healing.
The anaesthetic after-effects of the surgery will prevent you from driving yourself home afterward, so make sure you have someone with you to drive you home.
Benefits of Stapler Circumcision
Most circumcision surgeries are performed on adults with penile problems and on newborns for religious reasons. Most research studies indicate that stapler circumcision is outweighing the risks at present. In addition to reducing the risk of contracting UTIs, STIs, and HIV, circumcision can also lower the risk of developing penile cancer in men and cervical cancer in their sexual partners.
Nowadays, stapler and laser circumcision are preferred over open circumcision for both types of patients. Of these two techniques, stapler circumcision provides better results with minimal complications.
With stapler circumcision, the surrounding tissue is preserved and the foreskin is removed with minimal blood loss. There is a short recovery period, and the patient is completely recovered within a few weeks. The silicone ring left on the penis prevents infection and helps the patient recover after surgery.
