What are Varicose Veins?

Usually, varicose veins develop on the legs or feet when they become enlarged, twisted, or swollen. They are located just beneath the surface of the skin and are commonly caused by defects in the valves within the veins that allow blood to flow in the wrong direction, often appearing in blue or dark purple.


Symptoms of varicose veins in the early stages can include spider veins, leg pain, etc., or they can remain symptomatic for a long time. Varicose veins are usually caused by venous insufficiency, which progresses in stages. Varicose vein stages include:


Stage 1: Spider Veins-When the capillaries become compressed due to an underlying condition, spider veins form. Spider veins are dilated capillaries that resemble webs on the affected area.


Stage 2: Varicose Veins- The superficial veins are affected by these rope-like veins that bulge out from the pooling of blood. They are clearly visible on the outside.


Stage 3: Leg Edema- Blood pooling in the veins can cause chronic leg swelling or edema, restless leg syndrome, and severe cramps.


Stage 4: Skin Changes- As blood leaks from superficial veins into skin tissues, skin discoloration and thin and brown spots will appear.


Stage 5: Leg Ulcers- Leaving untreated, skin ulcers will form, causing immense pain and itching and requiring constant monitoring and care.

Treatment

Varicose veins can be treated with self-care measures, compression stockings, non-invasive treatments, and surgery.


Surgical treatment options


1. During vein stripping and ligation, the malfunctioning vein is tied off and removed completely from the body.

2. During a phlebectomy, also known as ambulatory phlebectomy or microphlebectomy, small pictures are made in the skin through which malfunctioning veins are removed.


Non-Surgical treatment options


1. Exercise, weight management, leg elevation, etc., are lifestyle modifications.

2. A conservative approach to improving blood circulation is to wear compression stockings.

3. In sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into varicose veins to close them.

4. In endovenous chemical ablation, a sclerosing agent is injected into the damaged or affected vein to close it.

5. The laser treatment, also performed endovenously, is an effective way to treat smaller varicose veins. It involves directing laser energy to the affected veins to close them.

6. During radiofrequency ablation, the affected veins are collapsed and sealed off using heat energy emitted by radio waves.

Varicose Veins Diagnosis

Vascular surgeons typically diagnose varicose veins through a physical examination of the legs. They look for swelling, pooling of blood, bulging veins, and other symptoms.

Prior to making a definitive diagnosis, the physician may suggest a Doppler ultrasound examination for varicose veins. By doing so, it can pinpoint which vein is experiencing issues and the extent of those issues. The test produces precise visuals of the affected vein and its blood flow through the valve. If an underlying condition is found during the ultrasound, further imaging tests like computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging may be recommended.

Laser Treatment

Laser ablation therapy, also known as endovenous laser ablation therapy, is one of the most popular methods of treating varicose veins. By using laser energy, it is possible to close malfunctioning or damaged veins without affecting other healthy veins in a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure. Varicose veins can usually be treated with laser energy, whether they are small or large.


A local anaesthesia or sedative medication is used to numb the affected area during the procedure, which takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the size and number of veins. To insert the catheter into the targeted vein, a small puncture or incision is made below the knee or near the ankle following an ultrasound.
